Why Sealing is Important

Grout

Sand-based and latex grout are both porous and will stain easily, sand-based more so than latex. Common causes of staining are coffee, tea, wine, juices, i.e. any colored liquid. Best Cleaning applies a penetrating sealer that crystallizes and fills the pores of the grout. Therefore, spills cannot penetrate and stain the grout.

The sealing process does not change the color or appearance of the grout. Sealed grout looks exactly the same as unsealed grout.

Stone

All natural stone is porous and, therefore, should be sealed.

Granite - commonly used as kitchen counters, appears impregnable, however, is very susceptible to staining from hot oil, as well as many other liquids. Any hot oil on unsealed granite will cause dark stains.

Marble - commonly used in bathrooms and as flooring, is susceptible to staining and etching. The sealing process will protect from staining but will not prevent etching caused by acidic materials.

Slate - commonly used as flooring, is very porous and most liquids will cause staining if not sealed. There are several sealers that can be used; one leaves the slate sealed but looking natural, others seal and enhance the color, leaving a light, medium or high gloss.

Limestone and Sandstone - commonly used as flooring, are also very porous and easily stained by any colored liquid, as well as dirty shoes.
